Americans living abroad generally have more time to file their federal income tax returns than their stateside peers. If your tax home and abode are outside the U.S. and Puerto Rico, you have until June 15, 2026. But this extension doesn’t include payments. If you owe tax, you must pay it by April 15, 2026, or face interest charges. Also, you’re required to file even if you qualify for the foreign earned income exclusion or foreign tax credit (which can potentially reduce or eliminate a taxpayer’s U.S. tax liability). And all worldwide income, such as wages, tips and unearned income (including income from foreign trusts or banks), must be reported. Contact us for help preparing your return.
