Find your tax notice.

Choose the agency and enter the notice or letter code. Search for current explanations from the IRS or any of the 50 states. IRS and California searches open on their agency websites; other states use a web search restricted to the official agency’s domain.

Enter only the notice or letter code printed on your correspondence. Do not enter a Social Security number, account number, or other personal information.

Results open on IRS.gov, where the IRS maintains the explanations.

Follow the response deadline printed on your notice. Agency search results may not include every notice. If you cannot find yours, use the official directory or contact our team. State selections cover the listed primary tax agency. Payroll, unemployment, local, or other tax notices may come from a different agency; confirm the sender on your letter.

Support in practice

Understand the notice before deciding how to respond.

Identify the issue and deadline

Review the complete correspondence, tax period, amounts, and requested action. A notice may involve a missing payment, information mismatch, proposed adjustment, or request for supporting records.

Build a documented response

Gather the relevant returns, payment confirmations, and supporting schedules. We help connect the records to the specific question rather than submitting an unfocused collection of documents.

Coordinate examination support

Help organize requested information and communications during an examination. We discuss the scope, address questions, and explain what additional records or clarification may be needed.

Evaluate available next steps

Depending on the facts, discuss correction requests, supporting explanations, review or appeal procedures, or payment-related options. Availability and outcomes depend on the matter and applicable agency rules.

Working together

A clear point of contact through the process.

Responding to an agency often takes more than one letter. We track the agreed work, explain requests as they arise, and keep you informed about responses and outstanding items. The purpose is to give you a practical understanding of the process as well as support with the paperwork.

A notice does not always mean the tax agency’s proposed adjustment is correct. It also should not be ignored. We begin with the records and the specific response instructions, then determine what action is appropriate.

If a notice arrives

Keep every page, including response instructions, and note when you received it. Share a complete copy through our approved secure channel. Contact us promptly if a deadline is close; do not assume a discussion with the firm extends an agency deadline.

Representation requires the appropriate authorization and an agreed engagement. We cannot promise a particular agency decision, penalty reduction, or settlement.

The work behind a resolution

A simple notice can take more than a simple call.

A payment mismatch or request for information may look straightforward. Resolving it can still involve reviewing the return, tracing payments, preparing authorization forms, gathering records, contacting the agency, and following up until its records reflect the outcome. That professional time can add up, even when the underlying issue is small.

Reaching an agent and resolving a case are different measures. A short telephone wait does not mean the matter will be closed during that call. Workloads, staffing capacity, the type of notice, and additional document requests can affect the overall timeline.

What published wait times tell us

The National Taxpayer Advocate’s June 2026 report described an average telephone hold time of about 14 minutes during the 2026 filing season, alongside IRS workforce reductions and service challenges. This is a historical call-wait average, not an estimate of the time required to resolve your notice. Read the IRS report ↗

When checked on September 19, 2026, California FTB’s customer-service dashboard displayed 19 days for secure messages and 84 days for mail or fax. Those channel-specific response times can change and are not promises of final resolution. Check current FTB wait times ↗

There is no single reliable resolution average that applies to every notice. Continue to follow the deadline on your letter while a matter is pending.

Platinum Tax Support

Plan for support before a notice arrives.

Platinum Tax Support combines tax preparation and planning with notice review, response assistance, and representation for covered matters. Having the support defined in advance gives you a clearer understanding of whom to contact and what help is included when an agency question arises.

Without an arrangement that covers the issue, notice work may require a separate engagement and additional fees. The cost depends on the records involved, the complexity of the matter, and the follow-up required—not simply the number of pages in the notice.

For clients who value continuity and coordinated communication, Platinum is worth considering. Our team can help organize the response and manage agreed follow-up, reducing the administrative work you need to handle yourself.

Coverage is limited to the matters, returns, tax years, and level of support specified in your engagement. Existing notices require a scope review. Platinum does not guarantee faster agency processing, a particular outcome, or payment of taxes, penalties, or interest.
